Why should I prune my trees?
There are a number of great reasons. Safety, aesthetics, and tree health are the three main reasons to prune. Dead or broken branches can be dangerous to you, your family, or business invitees and tenants. They can fall without warning, even on a calm day. If branches are too close to your home or business, they need to be pruned to prevent future damage to the building structure. From the aesthetic standpoint, pruning / trimming can make the tree look better. It can also provide a better view of the horizon and the surrounding property.
Will you top our trees?
We're here to please our clients, but this is not a good practice, particularly for large and healthy hardwood trees. Topping trees are generally frowned upon in the industry. It's bad because it alters the natural branch structure and integrity of the limbs causing weak branches in the future. It may look good to you, but it's deceiving. It does not make the tree safer and can have negative consequences to the tree itself.
Does it cost money for an estimate?
No. All estimates are free of charge and customized to your particular needs.
How long does it take to receive an estimate?
We first need to schedule a site visit. Once we cost and price the job, you'll receive a written estimate the following day.
Once I approve the estimate, how long does it take for the crew to come out?
Once we receive your signed approval, we can inform you of our schedule at that time. Depending on our workload, it could be immediately or it could take several days. We appreciate your patience and value all of our clients equally. Please note all emergency tree removal projects are given a higher priority.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We're fully insured and licensed to perform professional tree trimming and removal services in the state of Michigan.
Do you use spikes to trim and prune trees?
No. We don't use spikes to climb living trees. This is a no-no. Unfortunately, some companies still do this. This causes unhealthy and unnecessary wounds in the tree. Unless we're removing trees, we'll not use spikes to climb. This is a great question to ask if you're collecting multiple estimates.
When is the best time of year to prune trees?
That depends on the type of tree. There are many different tree species. Each tree responds differently from a diverse set of tree pruning methods during different time frames. For example, the proper time frame to trim oaks and elms would be December through February. Oak trees especially are very susceptible to "oak wilt" when pruned during other times. Pruning at the proper time will help preserve the stored food reserves that are needed for new spring growth. Of course you may have no choice if your oak tree has been damaged in a storm.
The pruning wounds will also tend to heal more quickly in the spring when pruned at the right time. You'll risk losing the oak tree if you trim them during the growing months. You also don't want to trim maples, birch, walnut, beech, and a few other deciduous trees during the early spring. They all have a heavy sap flow during the spring, so avoid pruning these types of trees until the tree's foliage has fully emerged. Most other deciduous trees can be pruned at any time.
The myth about wound dressing:
Research and experience have shown, applying an asphalt-based material to protect wounds give little to no value to the tree...no matter what the manufacturer may claim. This coating cracks over time and moisture from the rain, dew, and irrigation enters the cracks between the wood and the coating. The presence of this moisture makes the wound more susceptible to wood-rotting organisms than one without wood coating.
Do you haul away all the wood and debris?
Yes. All of the wood and debris from the tree(s) will be hauled away and chipped. Stump grindings are the shavings that are left over once the stump is ground out. These normally stay unless specified differently.
Will you cut up and leave the wood if I want to keep it?
Yes. We can just leave it where it falls, or we can cut it up and leave it for you to split and use later. Just let us know what you would like and how we can help you.
